How I Strengthened My Family Bond Through Pilates

As we wrap up 2023, it's a perfect time to reflect on the values that matter most in our lives.

For me, the "F" in FORM stands for Family, and I'm excited to introduce you to a transformative activity that has brought my family closer together – Pilates.

It's About Quality Time

In today's fast-paced world, finding activities that the whole family can enjoy together has become increasingly challenging. The demands of work, school, and extracurricular activities often lead family members in different directions. But maintaining strong family bonds is essential, and that's where Pilates comes in. Participating in activities together can create lasting memories and strengthen family relationships. It's about quality time, communication, and mutual support.

The Cornerstone Of Our Weekly Routine

If you were like me, you might be wondering, "What exactly is Pilates?" Pilates is a unique exercise method that combines stretching, resistance training, and core strengthening. It was developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, but to some, it may initially resemble yoga or even an archaic torture device. Pilates classes often involve the use of specialized equipment, with the "reformer" being one of the most well-known. This apparatus might appear intimidating at first, but it's designed to provide a comprehensive workout that focuses on core muscles and flexibility.

For my family, Pilates has become a cornerstone of our weekly routine. We attend sessions twice a week, dedicating an hour each time to Pilates exercises on the reformer machine. What makes our experience truly special is that we do it as a family. 

Pilates is both challenging and rewarding. You might start an exercise thinking it's easy, but by the end, you'll feel the burn. The best part is that we suffer together as a family.  There's even a running joke in our family that if you're the only one attending a session, you're in for a tougher time because the instructor can focus solely on you, pushing you to stretch further and do that extra repetition.

Why We Started Pilates

My family started our Pilates journey to address lingering stiffness and soreness from a past car accident. Over time, we've noticed improvements in our core strength, flexibility, and overall well-being. But more than physical benefits, we cherish the shared moments of struggle and triumph.  For me, watching my sons grapple with the challenging exercises is a source of joy. It's a testament to how Pilates not only enhances physical health but also fosters emotional connections within the family.

Our Health Reflects Our Choices

As we step into 2024, I encourage you to consider Pilates as a family activity or an individual pursuit. My family's story is a reminder that our health reflects the choices we make. It may test your limits, but the rewards are well worth it. Strengthening your body and forging deeper family connections can be a beautiful way to start the new year.
